How To Sell Art Online

Selling art online is achievable if you follow certain tips from experienced artists who have made the web work for them.

First, you must have top quality photographs of your art to upload onto a website, we obviously suggest this site to sell art online as it is totally free to use and you can create your own gallery for your art completely free of charge.

Customers buy art over the internet as if they were visiting an art gallery. If your photographs are grainy or take hours to appear, your potential (and impatient!) customer will probably move on and the opportunity is lost.

An artist can choose to sell their works over the internet in one of two ways:

1) You could create and manage your own website. You'll require: an artist biography, a gallery of photos displaying the art, an e-shop, a secure payment facility, terms and conditions dealing with posting, packaging, guarantees etc and a contact page. There are several online web-building packages that will create an online art shop for you in an instant - a perfect solution if you fear these things.

You might choose to add your art to an online gallery such as this one.  If you are not keen on administration this might be the right choice for you. There are several options and each works differently, including how they charge for your art to feature (some are upfront, some are on a pay-as-you-sell arrangement), so it makes sense to check out each one and make comparisons.

You'll also benefit from their own online and press marketing leaving you free to get on with creating more masterpieces. The downsides are that you'll pay a commission (this site charges NO commission) but usually around 25-30% of the sale price and your art may be refused if the online gallery does not think it will sell.

Your choice depends on how confident you are with managing your own site.

There's an argument of quantity versus quality here. It has been suggested that whilst more potential customers may see your art on an online web gallery, a better quality of customer will come direct to your own website.

Since most artists tend to sell to a small group of dedicated fans, capturing the information of those who spend a decent amount of time browsing your website and then keeping them informed of your new work is probably the most profitable way to sell your art online.

If you choose your own website, you'll be singularly responsible for managing and refreshing your website as often as possible. Your own website is imperative regardless of whether you use it to sell, but the crucial things are to:

(a)          ensure your photos are optimised for the web to ensure top quality images that upload quickly

(b)          keep it up to date and current (i.e. remove any art that has been sold)

(c)           market your site effectively. This can be achieved with online

marketing, linking to high-ranking sites, or using traditional marketing methods such as flyers and advertising etc.

If you sell your art in an online gallery, you'll be bound by their own terms and conditions.

Pricing your art is often the trickiest job and experts advise that to price your art realistically, you must appreciate how the art business works and how collectors behave. It requires an objective evaluation of the value and quality of your art in relation to all other art and all other artists.

Artists who sell art successfully online do so because:

(1)          Customers can purchase the artwork easily and quickly. It helps to have

a "buy now" button next to each image. Whilst this is often better achieved with online galleries, you only require the ability to accept credit cards or a secure payment system like PayPal on your own site.

(2)          Their sites rank highly with search engines and they have a well-built

website that has been optimised and linked well. Online portfolios won't do the job.

(3)          Their art photos are accompanied by compelling descriptions that include

an artist biography and comment, written well with correct spelling and grammar.

(4)          They use social networking like Facebook, Twitter etc to get themselves noticed and have a blog.

(5)          They keep in touch with past and potential customers with a regular newsletter.

(6)          They promote their website in print as well as online.

Choosing to sell your art online could be the best decision you've made, especially since the internet enables you to reach thousands, even millions of potential art buyers every day.
