This paintings works for me on two levels: symbolic and visual. The symbolism that the artist discusses is beautiful, and the fact that he's walking on a boardwalk that doesn't look especially stable seems to reveal the unsteadiness of one's path in life. The far shore, with its white blooming trees and pale ground, creates a perfect frame for the figure.
