The Red Guard started out as a student group that worshipped Mao, during a time that higher education was virtually stalled, so many youths had nothing to do or look forward to after high school. Da Zhong Zhang's sister was a Red Guard Girl and one of our other artists was in the Red Guard group.

Mao brought them into a semi-formal organization to try to control them, but they got out of his control and harshly administered his cultural revolution mandates. One of the jobs of Red Guards, during that time, was to put up newspapers and posters, most of which was done freehand instead of printed versions.

We have chosen several od Zhang's Red Guard Girl series for display in our gallery. We particularly like the composition of this one.
