The Batuan Paintings

The Batuan school of painting is practiced by brahman artists in the village of Batuan, which is situated ten kilometers to the South of Ubud. The paintings took on a much stronger statement about life in Bali, with subject matter including traditional village activities to camera-toting tourists and even surfers.
Earlier Batuan artists like Ida Bagus Made Togog and Ida Bagus Made Wija, dealt much more with the darker, supernatural side of life in Bali with people depicted as extremely vulnerable to the spririts and powers of nature including fearsome nocturnal moments when grotesque spooks, freakish animal monsters, and witches accosted people. This is particularly true for paintings collected by Margaret Mead and Gregory Bateson during their field studies in Bali in 1936 to 1939.

This beautiful oil painting of a mermaid and two god-like figures in the sky uses an especially interesting approach. The sea scene that these mythical figures are set in is painted in a traditional manner, and would even be a complete painting without the figures. The addition of the figures, though, seems to imply the that mythical surfaces in everyday environments.
