Painting with oils can be a challenging skill especially for the new artists however there is one technique that makes paining with oils so much easier and also means the novice artist can create something to be proud of with having the skill of the fine-art artists.
The technique I am referring to is called "wet on wet" and was much used and publicized by the wonderful but sadly late Bob Ross. He really made the wet - on - wet technique a key style for the artistic style he taught.
What is wet on wet?
The technique involves painting the canvas with a very very thin coat of either white primer or thinned down white oil paint - either works quite well. You can purchase specific white primers for this purpose but when I have run out I have found that using one of my normal white oil paints thinned down with white spirits is just as effective.
The method:
What you have to remember is that you have to complete the painting in one sitting with wet on wet (unlike normal oil painting work where you can keep coming back) the whole point of wet on wet is so you can blend paints to create a scene, The technique is especially useful when paintings clouds, sky scenes, sea scenes, lakes, or water of any kind.
What you do is firstly cover your canvas with the think base, then paint on top of this - making use of the slightly fluid surface to blend paints to create the desired effect. You will also find that it helps the background colours look more natural on the canvas and not stuck on.
Below is a short video clip which shows the technique in action:
